The newly elected mayors and chairmen of local government bodies took oaths this morning.
Accordingly, 92 elected local councilors — mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen and deputy chairmen — of the UPFA took oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees.
The UPFA won 45 out of the 65 local government bodies at election held on 23 July.
Speaking on the occasion President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the latest election victory was another testimony to the people’s faith in the government and it was the utmost responsibility of the local government bodies to preserve it.
President called upon the newly elected members to be active partners in the massive development projects currently undertaken by the government.
General Secretary of UPFA Minister Susil Premajayanth said the appointments have been made to top positions according to the number of preferential votes obtained by the elected officials.
Elections to 234 of the 335 local authorities were held on 17 March this year. Of the remaining, 65 local government bodies had polls on 23 July. (www.info.gov.lk)
