New Year celebrations in Israel

The annual New Year celebrations took place at the Gan Sacher Grounds in Jerusalem attended by a large number of Sri Lankans and invitees. Indian Ambassador Jaideep Sarkar was the Chief Guest while the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Palestine Michael Shomali, the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Jerusalem Ehud Rassabi and the Chairperson of Israel-Asia Chamber of Commerce Anat Bernistein Rich, were special invitees. A large crowd of Sri Lankans and others gathered to participate in the traditional Avurudu sports and activities followed by a musical show. The Indian Ambassador, during his speech, reiterated the strong and long, inseparable connections between the two friendly countries and commended the developments and economic progress of Sri Lanka with the dawn of peace and stability. He stated that cricket had bonded the two countries together and commended the performances of the cricketers for their victories as well as the progress in all other areas. The main awards presented during the event were given away by the two Ambassadors and the other invitees present. The Sri Lankan Consul in Jerusalem stressed the long relationship and friendship between the two countries, noting Lord Buddha’s visits and the close friendship between King Dharmasoka and King Devanampiyatissa. He also noted to the Sri Lankan workers, the importance of saving methods and money management through the State Banks instead of using other illegal methods and getting into difficulties. He said the Rs. 250 million currently remitted could be doubled if all the money earned is sent to help the economy to flourish and assist the development programs.
