The jogging track, which is 2.4 kilometres long and four metres wide, was constructed by the Land Reclaiming and Development Corporation operating under the purview of Defence and Urban Development Ministry has cost of Rs. 50 million to the Corporation. The Physical Fitting Centre constructed by the State Engineering Corporation on the directives of Minister Weerawansa, as a part of the social welfare measure to the public had cost Rs. 6.8 million.
Apart from constructing the jogging track, the Land Reclaiming and Development Corporation has also laboured to turn the environment, pleasant by cleaning abandoned lakes and shrubs along it and steps have been taken to provide street lamps via solar power enabling those willing to do jogging at night hours.
Malabe Chandrika Kumaratunga Mawatha is used by the public daily and children to attend to their day-to-day needs and a good number of parents with their children also use the same road for jogging as there was no other alternate place. This situation at times had caused difficulties and as a result of their reference, the Minister took steps to remedy the situation and the new jogging track now fulfils a long-felt need.
The opening ceremony was attended by Provincial Council Members Hector Bethgamage, Jagath Kumara, Deuty Mayor Kaduwela Municipal Council Buddhika Jayawilal, Land Reclaiming and Development Corporation Chairman Harshan de Silva and its Deputy General Manager S.P. Muthumila and several other state officials.
