New electronic national identity cards from November

The Department of Registration of Persons will commence issuing new electronic National Identity Cards from November for all citizens.
The new IDs incorporating fingerprints required for the current and future needs of national security will be issued through the Department of Registration of Persons for persons over age 15.
The Director General of the Department of Registration of Persons M.S. Sarath Kumara says the new Electronic National ID with fingerprints will be introduced in November.
The new ID, comprising security features against tampering, counterfeiting or forging, will include the person’s photo, bio data, fingerprints, and also the blood group. It will conform to the relevant international standards.
Compiling data for this ID which consist with a photograph and family details according to international civil aviation standards are now underway, the official has said.
The ID will be issued for three time periods. The ID issued to 15 to 20 year age group is valid for 10 years. It is valid for 15 years for the 25 to 30 year age group. The ID issued for over 45 years of age has no expiry date.
The Director General says the internationally accepted ID could use to prevent malpractices and frauds.
