The Sri Lanka Navy and Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) in a combined operation yesterday seized over 100 kilograms of heroin aboard an incoming vessel in the southern seas and arrested 11 foreign nationals.
The officers of the navy and police intercepted the vessel off the southern coast and apprehended 11 suspects including 10 Iranians and a Pakistani national on board a shipping vessel headed to Sri Lanka.
Aboard the ship the officers have seized 101 kilograms of heroin being smuggled into the country.
Trafficking of heroin into Sri Lanka by sea has been steadily increasing. The drugs are smuggled into the island in sea containers and fishing boats from southern India (for Indian heroin) and from Pakistan (for Afghan heroin).
