Sri Lankan Navy personnel have arrested 19 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu recently for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters and seized their five boats.
The Navy said a naval patrol craft attached to the Northern Naval Command arrested the 19 Indian fishermen in five Indian trawlers engaged in illegal fishing in the Northern Seas of Sri Lanka.
The arrested fishermen and trawlers have been handed over to Kayts Police for legal action.
Indian media reported that according to officials at the Consulate General’s office in Jaffna the arrested fishermen who were from Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu have been taken to the residence of the Kayts magistrate as Thursday is a Poya holiday.
The Sri Lankan Government has recently adopted a new policy of detaining Indian fishermen arrested for poaching in Sri Lankan waters for a long time and confiscating their boats to deter the Indian fishermen from trespassing into Sri Lankan waters.
