The Ministry of Agriculture is to hold a “National Farmers Week” from 1st to 5th August at the Agricultural College in Thandikulam, Vavuniya bringing together farmers from all over the island to meet and take part in programmes planned by the Ministry. The aim of launching the “National Farmers Week’ is to enhance agriculture by educating the farmers on modern nursery methods, fruits and seed production, new grafting methods, technical know how etc.
During the National Farmers Week am Agricultural exhibition is also to b held, to showcase development made in domestic agriculture. According to the Ministry of Agriculture the exhibition will depuct how to create an environment to uplift the individual households to be self reliant and thereby contribute to the development of Country’s economy. Vavuniya was selected as the venue to hold the National Farmers’ Week in order promote Vavuniya and to build awareness among the people how this land ravaged by the war could be made into a prosperous land now, through the development of agriculture.
A series of events and several discussions are being planned by the Ministry of Agriculture to boost the enthusiasm of farmers taking part in this event.
