After several discussions conducted recently with the sanitary labourers in Municipal Councils who collect garbage, Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha said that health insurance would be given for all sanitary labourers.

Meanwhile, Municipal Councils initiated collection of segregated waste from 1 November islandwide following the 04-05initiative of Minister Musthapha, who studied the progress of segregation of waste programme by discussing with the general public and the sanitary labourers of several municipalities and observed the issues and difficulties faced by the labourers.

Accordingly, Musthapha directed all Municipal Commissioners to offer health insurance for all sanitary labourers. He also directed the dust allowance which is at present being given for sewerage maintenance labourers to also be given to sanitary labourers. The Minister said that those labourers should undergo a medical check-up once in three months. He further emphasised that jackets, gloves and boots should be worn by the sanitary labourers when collecting garbage and the Municipal Commissioners were directed to avail those necessities.

Musthapha believes that due attention must be paid to the sanitary labourers as they have to work with waste which carries germs and that their social status can be uplifted through such steps taken on their behalf.
