Muslim IDPs protest erupts in Vavuniya

More than 1,200 protesters took part in an agitation in Vavuniya yesterday (3 February). The protesters, the bulk of them northern Muslim IDPs, were agitating for extension of the Indian Housing scheme towards them   They demanded that more Indian housing assistance to be extended them just as being given to other communities, as they have been rendered shelter-less for many years. The protests, which began at Vavuniya Gamini Sinhala School, soon spilled over towards other main streets of Vavuniya. According to those who witnessed the processions, protesters also signed a public motion addressed to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister of India Salman Khurshid, urging them to extend the ongoing Indian housing assistance scheme to northern Muslim IDPs as well, so that their issue would be resolved.
