Monaragala gets Rs. 1.7 b for development

  The Economic Development Ministry has allocated Rs. 1,723 million  for developing the Monaragala District in the Uva Province under the House-to-House, Village-to-Village National Economic Development Plan. The Monaragala District program will cover 319 Grama Seva Divisions in 11 Divisional Secretariat areas of the Monaragala, Wellawaya and Bibile electorates of the district.  The beneficiaries will be 448,142 persons of 132,370 families of the Monaragala District.  The number of Divi Neguma beneficiaries is 46,674. According to Monaragala District Secretary A. Padmanadan, 356 villages will benefit from this program which is being launched under the direction of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa on President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s advice. Ministers Sumedha Jayatilleke, Vijith Vijithamuni Soysa and Jagath Pushpakumara and MP Vijitha Berugoda and other people’s representatives will be supervising the development program under which Rs. 40 million for health and other facilities in schools, Rs.403 million for Gama Neguma, Rs.90 million for wildlife and nature conservation, Rs.90 million for Divi Neguma livelihood development, Rs.211 million for repairing small irrigation channels and Rs.40 million for internal rural development have been allocated. Also allocated for these purposes is Rs. 100 million under implementation of proposals by people representatives and Rs. 25 million under the Decentralised Budget. In addition 12 rural bridges in the Monaragala District have already been completed under the island-wide program to build 210 rural bridges under the Economic Development Ministry’s Direction. Work on an additional number of bridges in the Monaragala District is scheduled to begin under the program to build 1,000 bridges before the 2014, as proposed in this year’s Budget.
