Modi congratulates Maithri, reaffirms continued solidarity and support

New Delhi: Congratulating the newly elected President in Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said as a close friend and a neighbour India will continue to support Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Modi said in a Twitter message that

he spoke to Maithripala Sirisena and congratulated him. Modi said he congratulates the people of Sri Lanka on the peaceful and democratic poll process. “As a close friend & neighbour, reaffirmed India’s continued solidarity & support for Sri Lanka’s peace, development & prosperity,” Modi tweeted. At the presidential polls held in Sri Lanka Thursday the common opposition candidate claimed victory with over 52% of the votes defeating the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
