The damage done to Sri Lankan institutions and democracy over the past several years has been so immense that the reconstruction of the broken systems has been a massive challenge for the new Government, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga said recently.
Speaking at a Thaipongal ceremony in Kandy, the former President who is presently spearheading reconciliation processes under the new administration, said there were many complaints about delayed action on the part of the Government. “But the destruction of institutions has been so huge during the previous regime, we have encountered massive challenges as the new Government tries to reconstruct this damage,” she said.
Kumaratunga who also spoke to journalists after the event, said the Chairman of the SLFP must decide what action to take against those party members who are flouting party decisions. “If I had been chairman of the party I know what action I would take. But I can’t speak about the actions of other people,” she hinted. (DB)
