The Indian Government rushed to clarify yesterday that the meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Mahinda Rajapaksa scheduled to take place in Myanmar, on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit, was not an exclusive meeting. India’s Press Trust of India quoted Union Minister V. Narayansamy as saying that Singh may meet President Rajapaksa only on the sidelines of the summit, after Tamil Nadu politicians denounced the proposed meeting. “At a time when Tamils, Tamil outfits and even India are seeking a resolution for an independent probe into war crimes in Sri Lanka, Singh is holding talks with Rajapaksa ignoring the sentiments of Tamils and Tamil Nadu,” DMK Chief M. Karunanidhi said writing in the party organ ‘Murasoli,’ PTI reported. DMK was a key Congress party ally that quit the ruling UPA alliance last year over a Sri Lanka issue.
