Maldives Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon was in Sri Lanka yesterday to brief diplomats based in Colombo on the ongoing developments in the country following the arrest of the Maldivian Vice President and assured he would be treated within the laws laid out in the Constitution.
The country’s Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was arrested this week in connection with the 28 September bomb attack on board a boat carrying Maldivian President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Maumoon told reporters the Maldivian Government remained committed to conducting the investigations into the incident smoothly and transparently. “The investigation is ongoing and the Vice President will be afforded all rights under the Constitution.”
Sri Lanka too assisted in the investigations on a request by the Maldivian Government, providing technical and forensic assistance to investigate the blast, she said.
Maldivian Foreign Secretary Ali Naseer Mohamed and Assistant Police Commissioner of the Maldives Abdul Mannan Yoosuf were also present at the briefing.
