A major fire broke out in Wellawatte last evening, with the Fire Department sending five trucks to the site to try to stop it spreading to the entire shop line.
The fire broke out at a Hardware shop in Hampden Lane.
Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana moved swiftly to dispel speculation that the fire was part of the recent unrest.
“The shop where the fire started was Sinhalese owned,” he said, adding that the Police suspected an accident or electrical short circuit.
