The ‘Lawyers Collective’ in a statement has expressed its deepest sympathy and shock at the passing away of the Rev. Maduluwawe Sobita Thero, especially at a most critical juncture in the history of country. In a statement, the ‘Lawyers Collective’ said: “We remember at this sad moment with utmost gratitude and respect the pioneering role that the Rev. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero played in the struggle to restore democracy, rule of law and good governance and how these untiring efforts yielded the historic democratic victory of 8 January. It is the Rev. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero’s unique personality and unwavering commitment that helped mobilise all the democratic forces of the country in that historic struggle.”
The statement added: “He fought to build a society that respects democratic values and believes in equal rights for all. He saw the abolition of the executive presidential system as a necessary first step towards this end. His dream was to see the executive presidential system completely abolished. It is sad that it did not happen during his lifetime. Now it is left for all those who bravely stood with him against unprecedented odds, to fight for the complete and unconditional abolition of the executive presidential system as an everlasting memorial to this legendary leader. While we dedicate ourselves to this struggle to achieve his dream, we salute the Rev. Thero and wish for him the ultimate bliss of Nirvana.”
