The Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies will host a seminar on the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road on 7 November from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The seminar is being hosted to create awareness, foster a culture of dialogue and revive a rich cultural and trade connection between Sri Lanka and China.
The Silk Road has served as an avenue of exchanging cultural, political, economic, religious and artistic values from the Far East to Europe. Through this centuries-old connection, port cities along Sri Lanka have played a strategic role in building partnerships through diplomacy and trade.
The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road project echoes Sri Lanka’s diplomatic connection with the Chinese.
The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road will be discussed over a one-day seminar over three themes.
The institute will conduct a morning panel discussion titled ‘Maritime Silk Road: The past, present and future’. This panel will establish the usefulness in looking back through the annals of history in reworking past connections on a contemporary political platform.
Following this, engaging with contemporary international relations, a panel will discuss present and future opportunities for cooperation, connectivity and investment on a panel titled ‘Maritime Silk Road: Development through co-operation: An International Relations perspective’. These discussions will seek solutions to challenges and opportunities for development, and build sustainable and harmonious relations between both communities.
Finally, engaging with South Asia and beyond, a panel titled ‘Maritime Silk Road: Global and regional perspective’ will study available routes, challenges to development and opportunities to overcome regional constraints to the establishment of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road through the Indian Ocean to the Persian Gulf from the South China Sea.
Through this comprehensive full day workshop engaging diplomats, representatives of the business community, scholars and artists, the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies hopes to contribute to multi-dimensional development of Sino-Asian collaboration.
