Kotte Mayor Janaka Ranawaka and Kotte Municipal Council Opposition Leader Sugath Appuhamy were arrested yesterday for allegedly assaulting each other, the Police Media Unit said.
Ranawaka was arrested at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment, and was remanded until 11 May.
The alleged melee took place on 7 May during a protest staged by Appuhamy, who claimed that there were corrupt practices taking place within the Kotte Municipal Council.
Following the incident, both Appuhamy and Ranawaka lodged complaints against each other at the Welikada police station. Appuhamy was admitted to the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital before being arrested by the Police last evening. (CDS)
