Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is expected to make his first visit to Sri Lanka early next month, just weeks after the conclusion of the historic Northern Provincial Council elections that swept the Tamil National Alliance to victory.
During his visit, Minister Khurshid is expected to travel to the North and also hold discussion with Northern Province Chief Minister elect, Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, Indian media reports.
New Delhi which is pushing for full implementation of the 13th Amendment as a concession to the country’s Tamil population was instrumental in pushing the Government of Sri Lanka to hold the Northern elections and have welcomed it as an important step towards reconciliation.
This will be the new Indian Minister’s first visit to Colombo since taking office last year. The last Indian Foreign Minister to visit Sri Lanka was Minister S.M. Krishna in January 2012.
