Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga asked public servants to be efficient to keep up with the Government’s development drive.
Addressing a simple ceremony to mark the New Year at the Presidential Secretariat, he said the Secretariat staff should set an example to more than a million public servants by dedication, commitment and efficiency.
Year 2013 has been a remarkable year for Sri Lanka. The country saw the opening of the second International Airport at Mattala. The most significant achievement in year 2013 was Sri Lanka hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo and President Mahinda Rajapaksa assuming the Chair in Office of the organisation, the Secretary added.
The Secretary said the Government was able to restore peace after three decades of terrorist conflict and the New Year should be dedicated to development activities to take economic progress to an unprecedented level.
Earlier, the staff of the Presidential Secretariat led by Weeratunga took a pledge to work efficiently and productively with commitment, dedication and honesty, keeping the best interest of the public in mind.
Buddhist monks chanted pirith, and other religious leaders also invoked blessings on the country and people.
