The United National Party (UNP) yesterday said that the Supreme Court decision regarding the 19th Amendment to the Constitution proved that good governance had been established in the country.
UNP Parliamentarian and Cabinet Minister of Buddha Sasana, Public Administration and Good Governance Karu Jayasuriya in a media statement said that not only did the Court decision regarding the 19th Amendment prove that good governance had been established in the country but it also indicated the independence of the judiciary system in the country.
“This is the change people demanded through the 2015 presidential election and it was promised during the run-up to the election that the executive presidency would be abolished. And what is happening right now is a big step taken towards achieving this target and such democratic reforms are needed in a country,” he said.
Jayasuriya added that within 95 days the Government had been able to fulfill many of the promises they made during the run-up to the election and they were very pleased about this fact.
“It is our responsibility to make the 100-days program a success and to make the promises given in it realistic. We are very happy about the changes that have taken place in the country. There is still a lot to be done and it is the intention of the UNP to achieve that target and make these changes realistic. Therefore the UNP is committed to working with the President and the Government to create a better and more civilised society which respects the law,” he said.
