The Deputy Leader of main opposition United National Party (UNP), Karu Jayasuriya says his priority is to unite the party and form a vigorous opposition that fights for people’s rights.

Jayasuriya says his winning formula would be transparency and honesty and he wants to be fair and just to all, even to his critics.

“I am honest enough to say I will contest the UNP leadership,” he said.

Addressing media he said that there are factions in the party at present and those who express views within the party or outside have become victims of revenge and hate politics.

He called for an end to such actions in order to become a vibrant opposition.

Jayasuriya pointed out that he had not compromised the UNP in any way or been the cause for the party’s deterioration that has led to 62 MPs crossing over to the government.  He called the members of the Working Committee and the Parliamentary Group to decide whether they want a vigorous opposition that fights for the rights of the public.
