Socialist Youth Union (SYU), a youth group affiliated with the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna of Sri Lanka is to commence an agitation campaign to win the rightful benefits for the country’s youth. SYU National Organiser and former JVP MP, Bimal Rathnayaka says that the Union would agitate to remind the government of the country’s youth population, which has been forgotten in the 2012 budget.
Rathnayaka notes that the SYU is to commence a massive protest campaign from Colombo on Wednesday (30) together with students who have passed their Advanced level examinations, graduates and the unemployed youth.
He said the agitation campaign would be aimed at calling on the government to allocate funds to grant jobs to the youth, to grant employment to the unemployed graduates and to set up a national fund for the generation of employment.
The protest is to be held under the theme, “Stop budget tricks, grant jobs to the youth.”
According to Rathnayaka, the 10-year plan presented by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2006 has not been implemented even after the lapse of five years and three years after the end of the war.
He said the issue of youth unemployment was to be addressed in the plan, which has not happened to date. (Colombo Page)
