The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa to suspend the Chairman of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Jagath Balapatabendi in order to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations of corruption levelled against him. JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti said that there needs to be a proper inquiry into the allegations against the Commission’s Chairman or else the credibility of the institution is at stake. He explained that the President appoints the Chairman of the Commission and he should also take the necessary measures to ensure the credibility of the institution. An independent investigation has to be carried out by the Commission and it could only be done after suspending the Commission’s Chairman, according to the JVP MP. The JVP yesterday handed over a petition to the Commission about bribery and corruption allegedly committed by Balapatabendi in the past six years, which includes the period he was a Judge of the Supreme Court.
