The National Trade Union Center (NTUC) affiliated to Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday held a protest in Colombo together with unions representing several sectors in the country.

The NTUC commenced the combined action this evening opposite the Fort Railway Station with representatives from the fisheries, agriculture, estate, public and private sectors.

The protestors called on the government to stop wastage of public funds and to reduce the fuel prices, which would result in the reduction of prices of essential commodities.  NTUC Head, K.D. Lalkantha said the government should immediately take measures to bring down the fuel prices and to reduce the cost of living. He added that the government till then should provide proper incentive schemes to the people and a special cost of living allowance of Rs. 3,000 to the working masses.
