Sri Lanka’s Marxist party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna named Bimal Rathnayake to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the party’s National List MP Sarathchandra Mayadunne yesterday.
The JVP named Former Auditor General Sarathchandra Mayadunne and Sunil Handunneththi for the two National List slots the party received at the 17 August general elections. The JVP has a total of six seats in Parliament.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva announced that Rathnayake would be sworn in as an MP soon.
Rathnayake, who was the National Organiser of the JVP, contested the recent general election from the Gampaha District. However he failed to secure a seat in Parliament.
Rathnayake is a Member of the Central Committee as well as the Political Bureau of the JVP. He is also the National Organiser of the party as well as of the Socialist Youth Union (SYU).
Rathnayake represents several international leftist, progressive and anti-communalist organisations, the JVP said. (Colombopage)
