The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday filed a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption against its Chairman. JVP MP Sunil Handunneththi filed the complaint before the Commission against its Chairman, retired Supreme Court judge, Jagath Balapatabendi. According to the JVP Propaganda Secretary, Vijitha Herath complaint is based on various allegations of corruption levelled against Balapatabendi and call for an investigation into the matter by the Commission. The petitioner in his complaint said no confidence can be placed on the Chairman of the Bribery Commission and the two additional commissioners who sit with the Chairman on other matters and derive various facilities that are decided upon by the Chairman. The retired Supreme Court judge has been criticised in Parliament several times for covering up bribery and corruption charges against government politicians. Handunneththi said so long as Balapatabendi remains as the Chairman of the Bribery Commission and exerts authority on the officers of the Commission he cannot expect any justice from the Commission on this complaint or any other complaint brought before the Commission.
