The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) insists no political party has replaced it in local politics and that it still remains a strong, alternative force in the political arena.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that the JVP had never seen itself as a “third force” but an alternative force and that position still remains.
He said this after the JVP yesterday signed its nomination papers for the candidates contesting the Western and Southern Provincial council elections. Following the last provincial council elections, the Democratic Party led by former army commander Sarath Fonseka had established itself as the third force in local politics while the JVP lost ground.
Silva said his party is confident of doing well at the elections next month and that the main goal of the party is to change the political climate in the country. He said the JVP is ready to face any challenge and sees the upcoming elections as decisive.
