JVP doubts supremacy of parliament

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says there were doubts over the supremacy of parliament as stated by the government. JVP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that although the concept of parliament is supreme, there were doubts over the supremacy of the current parliament.

He explained that the current two-thirds majority of parliament claimed by the government does not reflect the will of the people.

He noted that the two-thirds had been made by buying over parliamentarians providing them various perks and privileged and by promising to withdraw various charges leveled against them.

According to Dissanayake, the two thirds majority in the present parliament is through MPs who have been bought over. He added that the executive has further strengthened its power by abolishing the independent commissions.

“We cannot be deceived by the slogan that ‘Parliament is supreme,’” Dissanayake said.
