The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says the local government bodies are the weakest governing system in the country.

JVP politburo member K.D. Lalkantha told a meeting in Elahera, Polonnaruwa that when the central government, provincial council and local government systems were compared, the local government system was the weakest.

He said the local government bodies have been unable to reach their potential when carrying out their duties.

Lalkantha explained that the local government bodies have not been fully involved in the development of the villages although some work has been done.

“There’s much more to be done. The local government bodies can play a huge role in the development of infrastructure and education facilities. The most important part of education and primary education comes under the purview of the local government bodies,” he said.

Lalkantha said that the governing UPFA and the main opposition UNP have been unable to meet the aspirations of the people with regard to developing the village. Therefore, he said it was time to make a change in the administration of the local government bodies in the country. (www.colombopage.com)
