A motion to increase the salaries of Judges was unanimously passed in Parliament yesterday. The government proposal to increase the salaries of the Judiciary was presented to Parliament by the Prime Minister.
According to the proposals presented by Premier D.M. Jayaratne these salary increments will be in effect from January 2006. This is in accordance with the State Administrative Circular No. 6/2006 of 25. 4.2006 and Article 108(1) of the Constitution, Jayaratne said.
Accordingly, the salary of the Chief Justice will be Rs. 70,000 plus Rs.1, 500 (Rs. 71, 500), Supreme Court judges and Court of Appeal Chairman’s pay will be Rs. 65,000 while the Court of Appeal judges will be paid Rs. 63,500.
