The Joint Opposition yesterday officially confirmed its next public rally would be on 8 October at 3.00 p.m. in Ratnapura town.
Addressing the media, MP Wimal Weerawansa said the rally would be led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and would also feature other leaders of the Joint Opposition.
Weerawansa added that the rally was against what he said was the Government’s attempt to betray the sovereignty of the country.
“We wanted to remove this deceitful Government to install a patriotic Government in the country. Then we named our next rally as ‘The power of the people for empowering struggle’,” he said.
MP Pavithra Wanniarachchi told the media that this hybrid Government had weakened the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s (SLFP) political ideologies, which were totally different from those of the United National Party (UNP).
“The SLFP is now controlled from Sirikotha and the SLFP MPs who represent the Joint Opposition have to face stepmotherly treatment in Parliament. I believe all SLFPers in the Joint Opposition will definitely participate in our Ratnapura rally,” she said.
