JHU to not support Opposition’s no-confidence motion

The Jathika Hela Urumaya says it will not back the main opposition United National Party’s no-confidence motion against the Government on the drugs issue.
JHU member and Colombo District Leader of Sri Lanka’s governing party at the forthcoming Western Provincial Council election, Udaya Gammanpila says his party has no intention of supporting the Opposition and working against the Government in Parliament.
The United National Party (UNP) last week handed over a no confidence motion to Parliament against the Government on the drug issue in the country. The UNP has continuously spoken about the increase in the drug menace faced by the country and has urged the Government to take action against the culprits including members of the Government who are allegedly involved in the drug trade.
The Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga has suggested that the coalition partners JHU and the National Freedom Front (NFF) of the ruling alliance as well as its members who are raising the issue of drug trade to support the no-confidence motion.
Amaratunga said the UNP has given an opportunity to those who are genuinely interested in eliminating the heroin menace to voice their position in Parliament.
“Those who are genuinely concerned about the deteriorating situation will support the motion and those playing politics with the issue will turn the other way,” the Chief Opposition Whip said.
However Gammanpila has said that while the JHU is firm on its stand over the drugs issue, it will not support any moves that aim to topple the Government.
