Japan has expressed its condolences over the death and destruction caused by the collapse of the Meethotamulla garbage dump and has said it will send a technical team to help with remedial measures.
A statement by the Prime Minister’s Office said Wickremesinghe has received a message of condolence addressed to the Government and people of Sri Lanka from the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe on 15 April expressing his heartfelt condolences and that of his government and people on the recent disaster.
“In the aftermath of this disaster, Prime Minister Abe has kindly offered Japan’s assistance to recovery efforts. A technical team from Japan is likely to visit Sri Lanka at the earliest to take stock of the situation and assist in remedial measures. Details are currently being worked out,” said the statement.
Wickremesinghe concluded a five-day working visit to Japan on Saturday and also had bilateral discussions with Abe.
