The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was directed by Police Chief N.K Ilangakoon on Wednesday, to investigate an alleged plot to kill President Maithripala Sirisena.
Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara speaking at a Cabinet briefing, he said the investigation was based on a remark made by the United National Party (UNP) Jaffna District Organiser Thiyagaraja Thuwarakeswaran at a pocket meeting, regarding a secret plan to murder President Sirisena on 22 December 2015.
Soon after his comment was telecast via news, the Police Chief ordered the CID to scrutinise all TV footage relating to the incident, to ascertain the accuracy of the allegation.
However Cabinet Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne said the Government was not aware of such attempt until Thuwarakeswaran had mentioned it .
