The United National Party (UNP) says that crises within opposition political parties are a threat to the country’s democracy.

Expressing concern over the crisis within the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the UNP was unhappy with the issues taking place in the JVP.

He said the UNP had also faced a similar situation.

However, Attanayake said the UNP had never formed an alliance with the JVP and ruled out any possibility of forming an alliance with any of the factions of the Marxist party.

He added that the UNP did not form an alliance with the JVP during the last presidential election although both parties had supported the common candidate Sarath Fonseka.
