The Presidential Commission investigating the alleged disappearances of persons in conflict affected areas in Sri Lanka will submit an interim report to President Mahinda Rajapaksa by the end of next month.
Secretary to the Commission, H.W. Gunadasa said that an interim report will be handed over to the President by the end of next month.
He said a website will also be launched by the Commission shortly in order to facilitate access to information by the complainants on the status of their complaint.
The Commission commenced sittings in Jaffna on Friday and is expected to conclude today and it has received complaints against the LTTE, security forces, other armed groups, the EPDP and Karuna’s group in the Jaffna District.
The Commission held its first public sittings in the Kilinochchi District in the Northern Province from 18-21 January, where it heard complaints from 440 people.
Following the conclusion of sittings in Jaffna, the Commission will hear cases in the Eastern Province. The Commission has received a total of approximately 13,700 complaints from all parts of the country. Of those complaints, approximately 9,300 are of civilian disappearances while 4,300 are of disappearances of security personnel.
It investigates cases of persons from the Northern and Eastern Provinces who went missing during the period 1990-2009. (Colombopage)
