India and Sri Lanka signed a MoU to develop the Most Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero Village (Elapathagama) in the Anuradhapura District on 14 July 2017.
High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Secretary to the Ministry of Housing and Construction W.K.K. Athukorala signed the MoU in the presence of Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya.
The village will be developed using a grant of Rs. 300 million from the Indian Government. The project envisages the construction of 153 new houses, a multipurpose community building and alms hall, an internal water supply system and renovation of the monk’s quarters and library.
This project is in line with the Sri Lanka Government’s policy of rehabilitation of rural villages for economic development. It will benefit 153 families residing in the village.
Venerable Monks from the Maha Sangha, the former First Lady of Sri Lanka Hema Premadasa, several Members of Parliament, senior officials of the Sri Lankan Government, Chairman of the Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero Commemoration Foundation Ravi Jayawardhana and other board members of the foundation participated in the event.
