Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday spoke of the government that will be formed after the next general election. Interestingly, he said that it would not be a United National Party government. Wickremesinghe observed that everyone in parliament should be a part of the government after the next general election. The Prime Minister made this statement at felicitation ceremony held at Royal College in Colombo to honor its distinguished old boys. “People have asked me are you going to form a UNP Government, a UNP-SLFP Government or an anti Mahinda Government. My answer to all that is no. I want the whole parliament to be in the Government,” Wickremesinghe said. The Prime Minister noted that Sri Lanka had lost a lot during the war and during the five years since the end of the war and now the government has a duty to ensure the country has a better future. He said he has a challenge before him, and that challenge is to work with all the political parties, which he notes he is now doing to implement constitutional reforms. Wickremesinghe added that what the country has before it is a good opportunity and the challenge for the people is to help build a good society. “Our mindset must change. Can we for five years, being in different political parties, put the country first, work something out and at the end of the five years contest and let the one who has the majority form the Government and the others be in the Opposition?” he asked. Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka is facing a crucial period but if all parties work together Sri Lanka has the opportunity to be the best country in South Asia.
