  • Former Govt. critic will contest WPC poll with ruling party
Vocal Government critic, Hirunika Premachandra and daughter of slain SLFP strongman Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra was granted a top organiser post in the ruling party yesterday. Premachandra has decided to contest the forthcoming Western Provincial Council elections on the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) ticket. Premachandra, whose father was gunned down in Kolonnawa during the Local Government elections in October 2011 in an altercation with UPFA MP Duminda Silva, met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday. President Rajapaksa appointed Premachandra SLFP Chief Organiser for Central Colombo, an electorate that is the stronghold of SLFP stalwart A.H.M. Fowzie. Hirunika Premachandra has publicly criticised the Government for its failure to expel MP Duminda Silva over the assassination of her father. Silva is a main suspect in the murder. (DB)
