By Ashwin Hemmathagama Our Lobby Correspondent UNP MP Harin Fernando yesterday resigned from Parliament with plans to contest in the forthcoming Uva Provincial Council Elections as the Chief Minister candidate from the United National Party. Extending his gratitude to the UNP leadership for appointing him as an organiser at the age of 26 and enabling him to be an elected member within three years, Fernando said that it was time to respect public opinion to make much-wanted changes in Uva regardless of what he would lose personally. “I took my decision to go against the family-centred corrupt rule in this country and for the betterment of the innocent majority in Uva-Wellassa, the poorest Province in Sri Lanka. This is swimming upstream. During this election, the Government will abuse State resources and start spending millions along with the Sri Lanka Police, which is the latest branch of the UPFA. Anyway, I am sure this election will be the turning point and a historical moment for our party. I thank all those who supported me during my stay in Parliament,” said MP Fernando. Meanwhile the UNP has nominated K. Velayudam to fill Fernando’s vacated seat.
