Hambantota heats up: First weapons-related violation reported

Shots were fired at the vehicle of UNP Southern Provincial Council election candidate for Beliatta, Anura Senaratne, polls monitors said. The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said the shots had been fired at 3 a.m. today.  This is the first election related incident in which a firearm was used, the monitors said. CaFFE said Senaratne had lodged a complaint with the monitors stating that a group arriving in a vehicle fired at the cab, 50-4079, which was parked outside his house at Aranwala Road, Beliatte. He said that the group drove away after he switched on the lights after he heard the gun shots.A Police complaint has been lodge, CaFFE said. Senaratne, who is a close associate of UNP MP Sajith Premadasa, said that he has been receiving threats for some time. The first incident of election-related violence was also reported from Hambantota, the monitors said.
