A Sri Lankan delegation headed by Minister of City Planning and Water Supply and Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauff Hakeem is participating in the Dhaka Water Conference scheduled for 29-30July.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the conference on 29July. United Nations Secretary General and the World Bank President have jointly convened a High Level Panel on Water (HLPW) for a two-year term where Prime Minister Hasina is a member along with 10 other Heads of State and Government and one Special Adviser.
The primary objective of the conference is about exploring how the countries in the region and beyond are planning to attain the highly challenging targets of SDG 6 and other water related issues under Agenda 2030. Open and constructive discussions entailing, inter-alia, water-related lighthouse policies, practices and initiatives; awareness-building for reducing stresses on water resources; cross-border co-operation among governments, societies and private sectors; sustainable water management; and innovative pathways for financing and implementation will be matters that will come up for deliberations for defining areas of cooperation for future actions surrounding SDG 6.
Countries in South Asia, East Asia and beyond will participate in the conference. On the sidelines of the Water Conference, Delta Coalition Working Group and Ministerial meetings as well as HLPW Sherpa meeting will also be held.
