Cabinet spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella clarified the stance of the Government regarding the Grade 5 scholarship exam and noted that while it had come up for discussion at the Cabinet it would not be scrapped. Insisting that a “yes or no” answer could not be given for such a complex issue the Minister went onto say that a change for the exam had been proposed but was not decided on by Education Minister Bandula Gunewardana or the Cabinet. “The discourse is continuing. It was the media that made a furor saying that the exam should be changed or scrapped and it was after this that we started considering options. Moreover people cannot say that we have not worked hard to development rural schools and lessen the demand for elite schools. However, this is a process and that needs to continue,” he said. The Minister was emphatic that resources for the education system had increased since the Rajapaksa Government came into power. He stressed that if politics were put side that would be evident to even the Opposition.   (UJ)
