Deputy Foreign Minister Ajith Perera yesterday said that the Government’s decision to go for a referendum against the 19th Amendment depended on the Supreme Court’s decision. He said that although parties such as the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) and several other petitioners had gone before the Supreme Court against the 19th Amendment, it would decide whether to push for a referendum after the court delivers its decision within two or three days. The Deputy Minister said that the Attorney General had completed making submissions to the Supreme Court yesterday on the amendment to the Constitution. He added that the amendment would be debated in Parliament on Thursday and Friday, while the vote would be taken on the Bill on Friday. However, the Minister said that if the Supreme Court ruled that a referendum should be held then the Government would abide by that decision but they would obtain a two-thirds majority at the third reading of the amendment on Friday.
