Cabinet approval has been given for the Government to take over 65 hectares of land to resettle 400 families in the north.
At the end of March 2016, 251,000 internally displaced families have been resettled in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. However, more than 14,000 families are to be further resettled. Currently 1,109 families are residing in 31 welfare camps in the Tellippalai Divisional Secretary Division and 641 families out of them are reported as landless families.
The Jaffna District Secretary has identified a land area of 65 hectares belonging to the Cement Corporation in Kankesanthurai for the resettlement of these families.
The proposal made by Minister of Prison Reforms, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs D. M. Swaminathan for the Government to acquire said land for the resettlement of 400 families in the Tellippalai Welfare Camp was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
