Main opposition United National Party (UNP) media chief and MP for Matara district Mangala Samaraweera says that the contemplated decision to postpone the elections for Galle and Matara Municipal Councils is due to inevitable defeat of the ruling party in these councils.
Samaraweera says that the decision has come directly from the President following a study by state intelligence on polls results in these local government areas.
Samaraweera told this to a website run by him. However, there was no confirmation of postponing the local polls scheduled for Saturday (8) although the polls chief pointed out the possibility due to an uncontrolled situation in these two areas.
The website said that Police failed to act against vehicle processions by Minister Dullas Alahapperuma in Matara and MP Nishantha Muthuhettigama in Galle yesterday.
