Govt. to establish national information centre under PM office

Providing access to accurate, complete and reliable information, the Government hopes to establish a national information centre, which will be monitored by the Office of the Prime Minister.

Mass Media Ministry Secretary Karunarathna Paranavithana said that the information centre would serve as the central point to provide information to the media and the general public.

“This centre will hold some extra duties which the State Information Department does not hold, and it will communicate the correct details about official areas as per a request made by the media or the public,” he said.

Cabinet Co-Spokesman Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said during a Cabinet decision briefing that the Cabinet had approved the proposal made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in this regard. 

He added that the centre would operate with the intention of implementing the rules of good governance, obtaining public opinion in policymaking, providing official information of the Government to the electronic and print media and coordinating information.Karunathilake added that it would act as the Government’s official media spokesperson.
