The Government has decided to consult the Supreme Court to get an interpretation on the 18th Amendment to the Constitution on the holding of a Presidential election.
The Government will seek an interpretation on the holding of a presidential election during the second term of office of an incumbent President.
Government introduced the 18th amendment to remove the restriction for a President to hold office more than two times. However, the time a Presidential election can be called in a second term of a President is not mentioned in the Amendment.
A President can call a Presidential election after completing four years in office for his second term but such time is not mentioned regarding a third term.
Government sources say that the government may bring a 19th Amendment to the Constitution in case a need arises.
