The Unity Government elected by the people is ready to resolve workers’ problems through discussions but will not be suppressed by the unjustifiable demands of trade unions, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

Participating in the Badulla District Development Program, the Prime Minister appreciated public servants who did not join the strike staged by several unions, led by the Government Medical Officers’ Association.

The Prime Minister, acknowledging that there are problems in the state and private sectors and that workers engage in various acts to win their demands, said the Government tries to solve these problems through discussions.

However, trade unions cannot overthrow a Government elected by the people and the Government would take strict action against such moves. “Such attempts will not be tolerated and will be dealt with very strongly,” Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said.

Alluding to the fact that strikes were being staged with the backing of the Joint Opposition, the Premier said that if former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s supporters wanted him to come back they had to wait for the people’s mandate at an opportune time. He added that party members in the state and private sectors should reject such actions.
